🧠 Context
Ice & Water is a multiplayer mobile game inspired by a traditional street game widely played across generations in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East.
The project was developed during a challenge at the Apple Developer Academy, where our team explored how nostalgic cultural games could be reimagined through digital experiences while preserving their social and playful spirit.
Our goal was not simply to recreate the game digitally, but to design an interactive experience that captures the excitement, competition, and teamwork found in the original physical version.
By combining cultural storytelling with modern game interaction design, the project aimed to revive a shared childhood experience in a new digital form.
🔍 Research & Insights
Before designing the game experience, we conducted research to understand how people perceive traditional street games and their emotional value.
Our research included:
• 102 survey participants
• 25 in-depth interviews
Key findings revealed that many people associate traditional games with strong nostalgic memories and social bonding.
77.5% of participants expressed interest in seeing these games revived in a digital format.
Participants also rated their nostalgia for these games at 4.17 / 5, highlighting the emotional value these experiences hold.
One participant shared:
“We return to these games to feel our childhood again.”
These insights confirmed that the opportunity was not only about building a game, but about reviving a cultural memory through interactive design.
🚨 The Problem
While modern mobile games provide high-quality graphics and mechanics, many of them lack the social simplicity and emotional connection found in traditional playground games.
These physical games rely heavily on:
• spontaneous interaction
• social competition
• movement and teamwork
• simple but engaging rules
When translated into digital environments, these qualities can easily be lost if the experience is not designed carefully.
The challenge was therefore to design a digital experience that preserves the spirit of the original game while adapting it to a mobile interface.
💡 Design Goal
Our goal was to design a multiplayer experience that keeps the energy and simplicity of the traditional game while introducing clear digital mechanics.
The experience needed to feel:
• fast-paced
• intuitive for new players
• visually clear during gameplay
• socially engaging
Instead of overcomplicating the game mechanics, we focused on maintaining the core gameplay loop while enhancing clarity through thoughtful interface design.
🎮 Game Concept
Ice & Water is a team-based multiplayer game where players are divided into two opposing teams.

💧 Water Team
Players compete by freezing opponents or freeing their teammates through strategic movement and coordination within the game environment.
The gameplay emphasizes:
• teamwork
• quick reactions
• spatial awareness
• competitive strategy
The game map was designed to encourage dynamic movement and player interaction, creating an experience that mirrors the excitement of real-world play.
🧩 Character Design
To communicate gameplay states clearly, we designed a set of characters that visually represent the player’s status during the match.
Each character state serves as immediate visual feedback for players:
💧 Water Character — active player
❄️ Ice Character — opposing player
🧊 Frozen State — immobilized player
The visual design of the characters helps players instantly understand the current game situation, which is critical in fast-paced multiplayer interactions.
These characters function not only as visual assets but also as UX indicators that communicate gameplay state and interaction possibilities.

🎨 Gameplay Interface
The interface was designed to support fast-paced gameplay without overwhelming players with unnecessary elements.
Key interface components included:
• real-time player movement feedback
• freeze and unfreeze interaction indicators
• clear team identification
• score tracking
• match outcome screens
By simplifying visual elements and prioritizing gameplay clarity, the interface ensures players can stay focused on strategy and interaction.

🧩 My Role — UX/UI Designer
As the UX/UI designer within the team, my responsibilities included:
• designing the gameplay interface
• defining player status indicators
• structuring the user flow for game sessions
• designing menu systems and onboarding screens
• creating visual feedback systems for player interactions
• collaborating closely with developers during implementation
My focus was on ensuring that the interface supported the gameplay rather than distracting from it.
⚡ Iteration & Testing
Through playtesting sessions, we observed how players interacted with the game mechanics and identified areas where visual feedback could be improved.
Testing revealed the importance of:
• clear visual indicators during freeze interactions
• intuitive player controls
• balanced gameplay pacing
These insights guided several design refinements that improved gameplay clarity and user engagement.
🎯 Outcome
The final prototype successfully translated a nostalgic childhood game into a dynamic digital multiplayer experience.
The project demonstrated how thoughtful UX design can preserve cultural experiences while adapting them to modern interactive platforms.
Players responded positively to the simplicity of the mechanics and the familiarity of the gameplay concept.

• collaborate within multidisciplinary development teams
• balance simplicity and engagement in gameplay design
It also strengthened my understanding of game UX, player interaction design, and real-time feedback systems.
